The Knot- Part One

IMG_0506.jpg

Have you ever had one of those really tangled, knotted fine stranded necklaces? The knot that looks way too challenging to ever untangle? A thing of beauty locked up in a box- no idea how the knots even formed! I had one this morning- on the morning of my 35th birthday. I had not been wearing this beautiful new diamond necklace that my boys bought me for Christmas- appropriately entitled "the journey"- and was just ignoring the problem. Every time I looked at the box where it was- I cringed to think about the knots that had formed in its fine links of white gold, though I longed to have its beauty around my neck.

Then, today- I was determined. Though I didn't know where to start- I began to untangle the necklace, finely holding one end while I delicately slid the other end through, time and time again to get to the core of the know and at last- freedom. The knots seemed to multiply; as I released one, there was another. Through these minutes of this seemingly impossible task, I realized it was such a metaphor for life when it sometimes seems too much too handle. The chains of mundane life that we get all wrapped up in are frivolous and fleeting compared to the eternity that God has promised through His son, Jesus! Yet how often do we keep the knots and hide the beauty? The untangling process of these precious stones began to untangle some thoughts on life in my mind and with God.

How did life become such a mess? I didn't even see it coming? I really want to soak in your beauty, Lord and be the light that you have called me to be. Where do I start to untangle the mess when life seems so challenging? "YOU JUST START," He spoke to me. As the knots of the necklace untangled, so did the thoughts relating to HIM. It is a tangled journey. There will be more knots along the way. Sometimes, they are easier removed than others. Practice patience. Occasionally, you move backwards a step and create more knots. Challenges are ahead. Keep going. There are even miracles along the way- like when you thought there were so many steps ahead, and the chain fell freely almost magically and came alive with its sparkle and shine once again! Hallelujah! The object of beauty is revealed- and it shines like nothing on this Earth- it is HIM!

The destination is worth the challenges- but when will we learn to keep the precious stones in a special, separate box where they will get the focus they deserve rather than getting caught up in knots- or better yet, when will we learn- starting with me- to proudly display HIS precious gems every day and leave them out of the box for the world to see?

So I Stay Near the Door

blue_door_st_emilion.jpg

One of my favorites...

I do my best to live my life with Jesus by my side but by venturing out as a bridge to the world- and this reminds me of that. With hands outstretched...

SO I STAY NEAR THE DOOR

By the Reverend Canon Samuel Moor Shoemaker, Jr., D.D., S.T.D.

I stay near the door.

I neither go too far in, nor stay too far out,

The door is the most important door in the world–

It is the door through which men walk when they find God.

There’s no use my going way inside, and staying there,

When so many are still outside, and they, as much as I,

Crave to know where the door is.

And all that so many ever find

Is only the wall where a door ought to be.

They creep along the wall like blind men,

With outstretched, groping hands,

Feeling for a door, knowing there must be a door,

Yet they never find it - - -

So I stay near the door.

The most tremendous thing in the world

Is for men to find that door–the door to God.

The most important thing any man can do

Is to take hold of one of those blind, groping hands,

And put it on the latch–the latch that only clicks

And opens to the man’s own touch.

Men die outside that door, as starving beggars die

On cold nights in cruel cities in the dead of winter–

Die for want of what is within their grasp.

They live, on the other side of it–because they have found it.

Nothing else matters compared to helping them find it,

And open it, and walk in, and find Him - - -

So I stay near the door.

Go in, great saints, go all the way in–

Go way down into the cavernous cellars,

And way up into the spacious attics–

It is a vast, roomy house, this house where God is.

Go into the deepest of hidden casements,

Of withdrawal, of silence, or sainthood.

Some must inhabit those inner rooms,

And know the depths and heights of God,

And call outside to the rest of us how wonderful it is.

Sometimes I take a deeper look in,

Sometimes venture a little farther;

But my place seems closer to the opening - - -

So I stay near the door.

There is another reason why I stay there.

Some people get part way in and become afraid

Lest God and the zeal of His house devour them;

For God is so very great, and asks all of us.

And these people feel a cosmic claustrophobia.

And want to get out. "Let me out!" they cry.

And the people way inside only terrify them more.

Somebody must be by the door to tell them that they are spoiled

For the old life, they have seen too much;

Once taste God, and nothing but God will do any more.

Somebody must be watching for the frightened

Who seek to sneak out just where they came in,

To tell them how much better it is inside.

The people too far in do not see how near these are

To leaving–preoccupied with the wonder of it all.

Somebody must watch for those who have entered the door,

But would like to run away. So for them too,

I stay near the door.

I admire the people who go way in.

But I wish they would not forget how it was

Before they got in. Then they would be able to help

The people who have not yet even found the door,

Or the people who want to run away again from God.

You can go in too deeply, and stay too long,

And forget the people outside the door.

As for me, I shall take my old accustomed place,

Near enough to God to hear Him, and know He is there,

But not so far from men as not to hear them,

And remember they are there, too.

Where? Outside the door–

Thousands of them, millions of them.

But–more important for me–

One of them, two of them, ten of them,

Whose hands I am intended to put on the latch.

For those I shall stay by the door and wait

For those who seek it.

"I had rather be a door-keeper . . . "

So I stay near the door

Photo Greeting Card Fundraiser

K4Kminilogo.jpg

NOW AVAILABLE!!! Our fundraising boxed greeting card gift set...

I have been blessed to become the creative director and photographer for a mission with a big heart, Kids4KidsCrossingBorders. I shot on location images to capture the essence of the people and the need in the Dominican Republic, and have created a fundraising effort of beautiful photographic greeting cards that tell the story of the heart of our mission.

Each box contains five unique images, blank inside on a background of clouds, with their own story on the back and is attractively gift boxed- perfect to spread hope and joy from your own pen or to give a box as a gift and share the love!

They are available for your donation of $25.00 plus $5.00 shipping.

CLICK HERE TO BUY GREETING CARDS!

Below are the stories I was moved to write to accompany the images on each card:

back_against_the_wall.jpg

Back Against the Wall

Do you ever feel like you are backed up against a wall? Things not going your way? Circumstances seem too much? Maybe it's time to look UP and let the Lord handle things HIS way and move that wall for you! There is always a light at the end of the road- and it starts with your surrender to His will.

This divinely inspired image was taken on a mountain roadside chapel in a remote rainforest area of the Dominican Republic on a completely foggy day. It reminds me of the light that truly radiates in us with the presence of the Lord, even through the fog of life.

"I look up to the mountains; does my strength come from mountains? No, my strength comes from God, who made heaven, and earth, and mountains." Psalm 121:1 MSG

humble_glass_slipper.jpg

Humble Glass Slipper

Recently, I have read in more than one Christian book about how the Lord's love for us is like a Cinderella story. We seem to be constantly waiting in this life for our "prince charming." Maybe that translates to the perfect partner, job, or situation- but we always seem to be waiting.

The Lord is the answer to this anticipation! He wants to run to us, embrace us, and bless us! When we open our hearts and truly follow Him, he will bring us that glass slipper and assures us of happily ever after in His majestic palace! When I saw this single, humble shoe in the midst of the poverty and filth in Cien Fuego, I recalled my Cinderella story with the Lord. What is yours?

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16 NIV

living_water.jpg

Living Water

This beautiful and unexpected waterfall was just one of the ways I was able to capture God's beauty in the DR. He said "STOP and get out of the car with your camera." These falls were not visible from the road, but were hidden behind the brush. What would be revealed to us- how life would flow- if we drank from His living waters more and responded when he called.

"If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Rivers of living water will brim and spill out of the depths of anyone who believes in me this way..." John 7:38 MSG

stepping_through.jpg

Are you stepping through?

Many times throughout life I have seen a pathway that leads to an answered prayer. Sometimes, I have remained on the "safe" side of the door- concerned about "what if." Other times, I have been trusting and brave enough to step through the door God has provided- with fantastic outcomes! He will give us the doorways to opportunities as answered prayer- but we must show faith and step through. God wants to show off- let Him!

"So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened." Luke 11:9-10 NIV

wash_your_hands.jpg

Wash Your Hands

I can say nothing more- He has spoken.

Job 11:13-20, MSG

"Still, if you set your heart on God and reach out to him, If you scrub your hands of sin and refuse to entertain evil in your home, You''l be able to face the world unashamed and keep a firm grip on life, guiltless and fearless. You'll forget your troubles; they'll be like old, faded photographs. Your world will be washed in sunshine, every shadow dispersed by dayspring. Full of hope, you'll relax, confident again; you'll look around, sit back, and take it easy. Expansive, without a care in the world, you'll be hunted out by many for your blessing."

A laugh at Wine!

finally-_time_to_make_wine_.jpg

Wal-Mart announced that, sometime in 2008, it will begin offering customers

a new discount item -- Wal-Mart's own brand of wine.

The world's largest retail chain is teaming up with Ernest &Julio Gallo

Winery of California to produce the spirits at an affordable price, in the

$2-$5 range.

Wine connoisseurs may not be inclined to place a bottle of Wal-Mart brand

into their shopping carts, but "there is a market for inexpensive wine,"

said Kathy Micken professor of marketing at University of Arkansas ,

Bentonville. "But the right name is important."

Customer surveys were conducted to determine the most attractive name for

the Wal-Mart wine brand. The top surveyed names in order of popularity

were:

10. Chateau Traileur Parc

09. White Trashfindel

08. Big Red Gulp

07. World Championship Riesling

06. NASCARbernet

05. Chef Boyardeaux

04. Peanut Noir

03. I Can't Believe it's not Vinegar

02. Grape Expectations

01. Nasti Spumante

The beauty of Wal-Mart wine is that it can be served with either white meat

(Possum) or red meat (Squirrel).

happy new year!

IMG_3705.JPG

Though my year of 2007 was not a mission around the world, the Lord opened my eyes and heart in just a short mission trip to WANTING to know Him on such a deeper level that I have pursued "knowing" Him and practicing HIs presence more every day- yet always seem to fall short of the mark that I know I would like to accomplish. My year has been a whirlwind- new homes (twice) new jobs (twice) and now second child...

Yet, with a strange sense of peace- I know I am doing my best by being a daughter to Him, a wife, and a mother with a Renaissance heart and a missionary's spirit. I "do" as much as I can and more than ever, "do" nothing but talk to Him- sing His praise- even in my car or while cooking breakfast for a family- or holding the precious life that grows inside me now- making me terribly uncomfortable!

My night times of little to none sleep have become sacred time with my Creator- just as He wants it, I'm sure- preparing me for my next mission...

As I am now 8 days "late" to have this baby- I am reminded that the Lord must still be knitting- something that I have a lack of patience for- yet with beautiful results!

For you created my inmost being;

you knit me together in my mother's womb. Psalm 139:13 NIV

Thanks again to Chris Joriann Photography for the fantastic maternity photos!

A Childs Angel

Once upon a time, there was a child in heaven about to be born. As she stood before Gods throne, she asked, "They tell me that you are sending me to earth tomorrow. How am I going to live there being so small and helpless?"

"Among the many angels, I chose one for you. She will be waiting for you and will take care of you."

"But here in heaven I sing and smile. That is enough for me to be happy."

"Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you every day. You will feel your angels love and be happy."

"And how am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me? I do not know the language that they speak on earth."

"Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will ever hear, and with much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak."

"And what will I do when I need to talk to you?"

"Your angel will place your hands together and will teach you how to pray."

"I have heard that on earth there are bad men. Who will protect me?"

"Your angel will protect you, even if it means risking its own life."

"But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore."

"Your angel will always talk to you about me and will teach you the way to come back to me, even though I will always be with you."

At that moment, there was great excitement in heaven. The choirs of angels raised their voices, and a bright light began to surround the young child. She began to hear earthly voices from her new home and was drawn toward a long, bright tunnel.

Suddenly, the child thought of one final question: "Oh, God, if I am about to leave you, please tell me my angels name."

My child, He smiled, "You will call your angel Mommy."

Our Prayer for Baby Reyneri "Due"

Heavenly Father,

We thank you for this wonderful adventure of family life you have blessed us with and we thank you for the new baby growing "fat and juicy" in mommy's belly. We will always remember and be grateful for your Son, Jesus at this time of His birth and the sacrifices made for us through His life and death. Help us to live more fully devoted to you in our family every day.

We ask now, Father for your blessing on this new baby- to bring it to the world healthy and strong at full term. During Jen's labor and delivery, will you remove all fears and replace them with great faith and wondrous expectation! Please grant Lori Nelson, our midwife, Daddy- Luis- mommy’s coach, Makani Kai- big brother, and those assisting at Jen's birth great wisdom and strength to best take care of and support mommy and baby for a safe and successful birth with no complications at home in Juno Beach. Grant our entire family, especially Jen, peace and comfort knowing she is in Your hands, Lord during the birth and at all times.

Please bring this new baby to the world healthy and whole, and strong with desire as they grow to be destined for great things through You, Father.

Thank you for hearing our prayers today and every day, Lord. We ask this in the name of Him who is called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace- Jesus Christ, Your Son.

Immigration

Alan_snow_1.jpg

This was written by a very talented photographer and good friend of mine, Alan Ostmann (see photo) from North Carolina. HIs views certainly express valid and eloquent points about living a Christian life of integrity- maybe our government can reconsider?

Blessings-

Jen

Dear Friends,

Much is being said about immigration lately and of course I have my

opinion too. One of my many teachers taught me one of the greatest

lessons I have ever learned. He taught me to look at important issue

holographically, from many different angles.

Let's put this in perspective. To the Native Americans, those that lived

here for ten to fifteen thousand years, we white people, who have been

here a few hundred years, are all illegal aliens. We are aliens who have

trashed their native land. So maybe we white folk should all go back

from where we came from. But in truth we are all natives of the same

planet and the same Divine. And what is a country but an arbitrary

physical division of the planet. I feel patriotism and protectionism can

be used as a sin against the will of God. Patriotism can be a good thing

but it can also be 'thinking small'. It judges and separates the races

of the world. "This is mine and you can't come in" attitude fails to see

the big picture. And what would Jesus say? Jesus might be ashamed of a

country that treats its neighbors like invading trash. And what makes

them illegal, a man made law? Surely not a Spiritual Law. And in my

heart the Spiritual Laws of God and Nature will always take precedence

over the arbitrary laws of men. I think its time to open our hearts and

minds and accept these so called illegal aliens as fellow Americans for

we are all fellow children of God.

Sincerely,

Alan

God's Amazing Provision

portugal_door.JPG

Notes from February's journal...

When I sat here reflecting on my day, about to do a little work, I noticed an email that came from a dear friend who is traveling around the world on the “World Race”- a year long mission of young kids out to do good & spread the word of God. I have been meaning to make a contribution to her cause- but have just been putting it off and forgetting.

Today was the day- God spoke to my heart to give her $50. I sent it anonymously- she doesn’t need to know who is God’s messenger- just that she is being provided for on her journey.

After making the debit card online contribution, I set a computer Outlook reminder for every Saturday this year to support her financially; I committed to do what God instructed me to every week for her.

Not five minutes after making this contribution and reminder of the weeks to come, there was a knock on my door of the hotel. Luis is off serving wine, and I have committed to take the evening to finish some work on our new websites. I am not expecting anyone. It is a guy with a lot of dry cleaning for delivery and an envelope for room #210- us.

Expecting a fax or directions for tomorrow’s auction for Luis, I open the envelope only to find five crisp 10-dollar bills! That's it- no note- no business card- totally anonymous- a complete gift from God. How incredible to think that His timing can be so immediate if we listen to Him when He calls on our hearts. Amazing- how He provides if we just let Him and follow His lead! A simple act- a gift- returned. Someone else must have been listening too, and therefore I was blessed.

I immediately drop to my knees looking at the sun setting out my window in thanksgiving and praise- laughing and crying at the same time with the thought of my God and His son Jesus looking at me and smiling too! I’m sure He was laughing right along- what an amazing moment of experiencing God’s provision and knowing I (and my family and extended family in His kingdom) am ALWAYS provided for- even in the most unexpected ways!

I know we are on the right path with this new town- new direction- following Your lead, God- please continue to let your Glory shine through me and my husband and family to be able to help others- serve others- expand our territory while we shine your light, and your love.

Who is God calling you to give to? Who can you bless with one of His everyday miracles? How will He bless you? For He is truly AMAZING!
